Bitcoin has been the subject of many legends and notable events throughout its short history. Below are some of the most noteworthy legends and stories.

  1. The True Identity of Satoshi Nakamoto:
    • The true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the inventor of Bitcoin, remains a mystery to this day. He (or they) published the Bitcoin white paper in 2008 and continued to interact with the community for several years afterward, but suddenly disappeared in 2010.Despite numerous speculations and investigations, his true identity has not been revealed.
  2. Bitcoin Pizza Day:
    • As mentioned in the previous question, May 22, 2010—the day two pizzas were purchased for 10,000 bitcoins—is considered a very important date in the history of Bitcoin.
  3. The Collapse of Mt. Gox:
    • Between 2013 and 2014, Mt. Gox—then the largest Bitcoin exchange—was hacked several times and ultimately lost 850,000 Bitcoin (worth approximately $450 million at the time). This incident severely undermined trust in the entire Bitcoin industry, and the price of Bitcoin plummeted.
  4. The Raid on Silk Road:
    • Silk Road was known as a black market that used Bitcoin. It was shut down by the FBI in 2013, and its operator, Ross Ulbricht, was arrested. This incident sparked debate about how Bitcoin is used.
  5. Bitcoin Fork:
    • In 2017, due to disagreements over different solutions to Bitcoin’s scaling issues, Bitcoin forked into a new currency called “Bitcoin Cash.” This event is known as a “hard fork” and is considered a major milestone in Bitcoin’s history.
  6. Bitcoin Price Volatility:
    • Bitcoin’s price has experienced many fluctuations throughout its history. Its price movements—including the sharp rise at the end of 2017, the subsequent decline, and the renewed price increase since 2020—have attracted significant attention from the media and investors.
